What is Power Play?

Power Play is a multiplier which is applied to any prizes you win apart from the jackpot. However, you need to opt in to Power Play when you buy your ticket by marking the relevant box on your playslip. It costs an extra $1 per play, so you would have to pay $3 in total if you were buying a single line of numbers, $6 for two lines, and so on.

When the Powerball drawing takes place, a Power Play number is also announced. This number is selected at random and will be either 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10. If you have won a prize of $50,000 (Match 4 + Powerball) or less, the amount will be multiplied by the value of the Power Play number if you have added this option to your ticket.

Anyone who matches five numbers without the Powerball will see their award doubled from $1 million to $2 million, regardless of which Power Play number is selected. Go to the Prizes page to see all the payouts you can get from opting in to Power Play.

The 10x Multiplier

The 10x Power Play multiplier is only available when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less, as an added incentive to take part when the top prize is on the relatively low side. If the 10x multiplier is selected, it is therefore possible to win in the third prize tier and still get $500,000.

Considering this rule, the best time to add Power Play to your ticket is before the jackpot has exceeded $150 million. There is a better chance that you will receive a larger payout if you win in one of the lower categories, while the odds of landing the top prize remain the same.

The odds of each Power Play option being drawn are not the same. The 2x multiplier is most likely to be selected, followed by the 3x, 4x, 5x and, when available, the 10x. The table below shows the chances of each multiplier being drawn.

How Many Ticket Holders Add Power Play?

The majority of players do not add the Power Play option to their ticket. On average, the percentage of prize winners who add Power Play is between 20 and 24 percent when the jackpot is $150 million or less. When the jackpot is larger, even fewer players add Power Play, dropping to around 14 to 16 percent of prize winners.

New and infrequent players are attracted to the game as the jackpot gets bigger, while the focus becomes increasingly on just trying to win the top prize. But if you add Power Play you are boosting your chances of landing a larger payout in eight of the nine prize categories. It seems like everyone has their own ideas of how they're going to win the Powerball. Whether you've spent hours calculating the perfect set of numbers or plan on leaving it all to the computer, you would probably do anything to get a leg up in this battle for the billion. Some people have chosen to spend an extra dollar for the Power Play option, which is a way of multiplying your winnings if you somehow win second place or below. But let's face it: The odds of getting anything are undoubtedly stacked against you. So should you use the Power Play option on Powerball? It might be a waste of your precious dollar.

UPDATE: This post was originally published in January 2016. As of Aug. 23, 2017, the new Powerball jackpot has hit $700 million (and if there are no winners, it'll go to $1 billion). The Powerball will be drawn at 10:59 p.m. EST.

To give you a sense of how competitive this thing really is, you should know that you have a one in 292.2 million chance of winning the jackpot tonight. According to NBC News, that is comparable to flipping a quarter and getting heads 28 times in a row. Even if you bought a thousand tickets, your chances wouldn't be greater in any significant way than they would be if you bought just one. So can spending an extra buck really make a difference? In all honesty, you're still probably throwing your money away. Your odds of winning are just so ridiculously slim.

That said, although nobody won the jackpot Saturday night, 25 players won $1 million, and three of them chose the Power Play option, landing them with $2 million. Of the 451 people who won $50,000, 55 chose the Power Play option and doubled their winnings. In smaller jackpots, the Power Play option can multiply winnings up to 10 times, but due to the enormity of this Powerball, non-jackpot winners can only double it (though I don't hear anyone complaining about a $2 million reward). So while your chances are just as slim if you choose Power Play, if for some astounding reason you win a chunk, then that chunk will get a lot bigger.

Who Won The Powerball Last Night

There are two ways you can win big without actually winning the jackpot: A) Get all five numbers on the white balls in any order, or B) get four numbers on the white balls, as well as the final Powerball number. The winnings decrease to $100 if you only have four matching white balls, or three and the Powerball, and to less than $10 if you only get a few of the right numbers. Remember, though, that any of these winnings can double if you purchase the Power Play option.

What it really comes down to is how willing you are to part with that extra dollar. I can't emphasize enough that you most likely won't win anything. Plain and simple. Life goes on. Nevertheless, there's still that tiny glimmer of hope that you might get something. So if you're gung-ho about taking this gamble all the way, then by all means, be my guest and go for that Power Play. Just don't plan on getting your $3 back.
